As my days left in Virginia quickly diminish, I have been trying to tie up loose ends and see friends. I cannot believe how quickly the past six weeks have passed and what seems even more astonishing to me is that in less than a week I will no longer live in Virginia [and I have to say, I'm pretty darned excited.]
So, this weekend, when I received an invitation from my friends Nicole and Lee to go out on the Rappahannock River in their boat, I jumped at the opportunity. I love the water and I love being on a boat even though I rarely get the opportunity to do so.
After driving about an hour outside of Richmond, we reached the Rappahannock River where we put the boat in. Lee really wanted to fish but I think Nicole and I really just wanted to lounge on a boat. It was a gorgeous day which could easily be because of the Tropical Storm about to hit the east coast. It was a pretty fun, yet uneventful day.
The past week or so has been quite reflective and the time spent in the boat racing across the water was good quiet time. As we drove by the marina, the vision of all the sailboats parked in their slips made me think about the three guys from Seattle who have spent the last two years of their lives sailing around the world. I have often thought that they were living the dream and I truly commend them for going out and doing what they've dreamed of but, as we slowly passed by one sailboat after another, I couldn't help but think to myself "there's no way I could do that." I am sure their stories and experiences completely out-weigh everything else but I just can't get beyond the fact that three people shared such a small space for such a long period of time. As my mom said "Its a good thing they're all guys."
At the end of our day, we loaded the boat onto the trailer and headed back to Richmond. Arriving in Richmond, I realized the power of the Virginia sun when I caught a vision of my lobster red skin in the mirror. I haven't had a sun burn is years, so long ago that I couldn't even begin to tell you the last time. I guess I should enjoy it as soon I hear I will be dreaming of a sunny day.
