Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start! I don’t know about you but it’s taking me a little longer than usual to get into the swing of things. With so many parties and events and volunteer opportunities and shopping and family visiting to do it kind of feels like I need a weekend to recover from my weekend. Good thing Seattle made Starbucks, and Starbucks makes Gingerbread Lattes. Without a little caffeine and Christmas in my cup I’d be looking a lot like the Grinch.
This weekend TWIF staff and volunteers were busy cooking and monitoring and baking all over town in an array of different fun activities. A handful of friendly cooks collaborated on Thursday to whip up dozens of delicious meals for those in need at our monthly Get Cookin’ event. In 2012 Get Cookin’ gets a new name, Kitchen Social, so be sure to visit the website to see when the next event is.
Friday was the last night that TWIFfers had the opportunity to help out at the King 5 Wonderland Carousel downtown. Volunteers helped cheerful tots on and off the horses and sleighs while being treated to the hundreds of carolers that filled the streets with holiday tunes. Some volunteers couldn’t help but to help themselves to a spin on the carousel, too You’re never too old to enjoy a little spin every now and then!
And Saturday the scent of cinnamon and spice and everything nice warmed up our kitchen as TWIF volunteers donned their aprons and baked sheets of gingerbread to be morphed into magical gingerbread houses this Saturday. The best part of volunteering to help bake sheets of cookies? The scraps and oopsies have to go somewhere…and usually that’s in my belly! Or I suppose they could go to someone else’s. The holidays make me feel more generous than usual
Speaking of turning these gingerbread house pieces into cherished, candy-coated homes, how would you like to help some great kids at the YCWA construct their own creations? I just checked the events page on our website and it looks like we’ve had a slot or two open up and they can be yours if you act fast! Volunteers will hang out at the YWCA from 10-2 this Saturday and will assist youngins with frosting and decorating their holiday houses. Gumdrops and licorice and chocolates, oh my! Those prone to sugar comas need not apply.
If you happen to be one of those sugar-coma prone people then I suggest that you opt to bring out your inner elf and help us sort toys next Saturday at Childhaven. And like any good elf, we’ll be testing all the toys to assure that they’re safe and fun. Well okay, we already know that all the toys we’ll be giving away are safe. Of course we wouldn’t be giving away any questionable gifts. But I’ll be damned if I don’t make sure that the Bop Its are a-boppin’ and the frisbees are a-flyin’. Honestly, it’s the elfly thing to do in this situation Come join the fun on Saturday, December 17th from 11-4 and get ready to meet some great people while spreading a little holiday cheer.
And lastly a friendly reminder that if you haven’t already signed up for our monthly giving opportunity, please check out the website and consider your 15$ or so a month as a small price to pay for a year’s worth of good karma Your money goes directly to helping TWIF provide food for our phenomenal cooking programs and spreads further than I’m sure you know. We’re aiming to raise $9000 and every donation is a big step in that direction!
