As an adult, you get to pick and choose what you do and when you do it, but your free time is more limited than ever. You may find yourself reminiscing about your childhood, when things were simpler and just plain fun. Between your career, commute and commitments, what little time left over is cherished, so make what you choose to do with it matter. We may not be able to go back to summer camp, but we can still have fun. Unleash your inner child with these awesome classes and workshops in Seattle.
Get into the Swing of Things
If you’ve ever dreamed of joining the circus, this one’s for you. At the School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts (SANCA) adults can sign up for a two-hour course learning the techniques of the most exciting circus act: the flying trapeze. And when that’s over, be sure to check out the other adult classes like wire walking, juggling and unicycling. For those who’d like an introduction to the circus world, sign up for the hour-long Adult Circus course, which covers all the aforementioned acts plus trampoline, tumbling, and more.
Get Back in the Saddle
Spinning classes have their place in our lives these days, but there’s nothing like getting back to basics with the ol’ bicycle. For those who have never ridden a bike, Cascade Bicycle Club offers lessons for adults in Magnuson Park. If you’re comfortable on the bike and want to take your riding to the next level, check out Cycle University’s skills classes and boot camps.
Get Your Groove On
Dance lessons were a popular pastime and you probably have the home videos of your recitals to prove it. But if you’ve never quite found yourself comfortable on the dance floor, never mind the stage, sign up for intro to dance or hip hop at Velocity Dance Center. Beginner or pro, anyone who wants to break a sweat to the beat is welcome to attend Dance Church, held at the center on Sunday mornings.
Get Your Feet off the Ground
When you were a kid, there was nothing more exciting than finding a good climbing tree. If you thought your tree-climbing days were behind you, think again. Thanks to Canopy Climbers, adults of all fitness levels can get back up those trees during the monthly climb in Volunteer Park.
Get It Down to a Fine Art
Express your creative side with a range of art classes in the city. For those who’d like to dedicate a weekend or longer to learning the proper techniques of visual arts from figure drawing to sculpture to oil painting, sign up for a workshop series at the Gage Academy of Art. If you’d prefer to dabble in the art world, you may like the social art classes around town such as MindUnwind’s Paint Your Pet workshop. Bring a photo of Fido, and unleash your talent on canvas during this two-hour class. If that’s still too much artistic commitment for you, pop into the Treehouse Lounge for drinks and DIY bar crafts. And speaking of crafts, don’t forget about your crafty side! Put needle to fabric at Stitches’ sewing and knitting classes, and leave with a handmade tote bag, decorative pillow or even a pair of boxer briefs!
Get Your Game Face On
It may feel like we’re stuck in the game of Life, but now is as good a time as any to pull out your favorite board games. These aren’t workshops per se, but there’s nothing like a good dose of healthy competition over Scrabble or Monopoly, especially when served with a side of beer. Visit Cafe Mox and AFK Tavern where there’s plenty of space to play your favorite games with your friends. And if you haven’t already, sign up for TWIF’s board game nights (I call dibs on the Monopoly hat piece!).
