The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

Ballard Locks is a nickname for The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks that was built in 1911. The Locks provides a link for boats to travel from the Puget Sound to the Ship Canal, which then connects to Lake Union and Lake Washington. Like the Panama Canal, when boats pass through the Ballard Locks the water level adjusts to get them to the other side safely. The Locks is a popular attraction to tourists in Ballard.
