Arts Corps

Mission: Arts Corps unlocks the creative power of youth through arts education and community collaboration so that all young people have the courage to imagine and freedom to create a just and vibrant future.

Category: Arts, Culture & Humanities

Creativity remains the most important skill of the 21st century and the most important leadership quality of the future.

Research demonstrates time and time again that arts learning is essential to human development—it fosters creativity, engages diverse learners and deepens connections between people and ideas.

In spite of this, arts programs in our public school systems remain uneven and sometimes nonexistent, especially those in low-income communities of color.

Our education system is in crisis. Decades-long educational reform efforts driven by an emphasis on high stakes tests and a narrow focus on math and reading has failed, and has in fact increased the racial and socioeconomic divide in academic opportunity and achievement. Access to strong arts learning opportunities has been a victim of budget cuts and this dominant reform framework, declining in low income schools dramatically since 1980.

Arts Corps challenges the crisis in education by addressing the disparity in access to high quality arts education. Arts Corps believes equitable arts learning opportunities for all young people will strengthen our schools and communities, and unlock possibilities for our young people in school, college, career and life.

Arts Corps classes are proven to build creative habits of mind – higher order thinking skills that build a foundation for learning and thriving in the 21st century. These include:

  • imagining possibilities
  • persistence & discipline
  • critical thinking
  • courage & risk-taking
  • reflection

Through arts education and community collaboration, Arts Corps unlocks the creative power of youth so that all young people have the courage to imagine and freedom to create a just and vibrant future.

Events We Have Partnered On:

Other Ways to Get Involved:
Arts Corps relies on volunteers for their talent, expertise, availability and commitment. Arts Corps seeks volunteers in the following areas:

In the Classroom:
Have a passion for kids and learning? Work directly with students in a volunteer classroom position. These are a good fit for those in need of service learning hours or committed community volunteers who enjoy a hands-on, direct approach. These position require a weekly commitment for the duration of one academic year.

Out of the Classroom:
Office Administration and One-time Projects
Help Arts Corps keep its database and other records current! You can work from Corps headquarters during times that are most convenient for you. Arts Corps also has mass mailings at key times during the year, where mass collating and envelope-stuffing is crucial!

Fund Development Committee:
This committee helps to nurture a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, with the goal of sustaining and strengthening Arts Corps programs and services. The committee meets every other month after work. Volunteers are sought who can commit to a minimum of one year.

Special Events:
Staff a table or booth and help spread the word about the Corps at community events, or assist at one of our own events.

Arts Corps' Annual Student Showcase require hundreds of hands and hearts to make it the showcase series students deserve. Amidst the excitement and awe at Student Showcases, volunteers at this event will help with checking in students and directing parents and community members to the right places, setting up and breaking down the show, assisting with pre-show arts activities with students and anything else that falls in between.
