Where to go: FareStart's Contract Kitchen is located at 700 Virginia Street.
Is there parking? There is not designated parking for the building. We suggest public transportation.
When to go: You will want to arrive on-site at the time of your scheduled shift. Shift times are 10am - 3pm. If you cannot remember the shift time that you registered for, you can look for your shift confirmation from Universe or email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you arrive late for your volunteer shift, we may not be able to accommodate you.
How to find us: If you're standing in front of the restaurant looking at the front doors, go to the right and walk down the building until you get to a set of doors with a sign that says "student training and administration", you'll then have to call a number that's posted and someone in the kitchen will answer then come up and get you. Your TWIF Lead will be waiting for you inside. Please note: should you arrive early, please do not call the phone number for early entry - this can be disruptive to other programs happening at FareStart.
TWIF Lead: We have a TWIF Lead at every event to lead the volunteer group. They will be your go-to person for everything you need during the event.
What to bring: You must have proper identification with you to volunteer. A water bottle and a snack are also never a bad idea. Locks, lockers, hairnets and gloves will be provided for you.
What to wear: You will inevitably get a little food on whatever you are wearing so wear clothes that you are not afraid to get a little dirty. Aprons or cooking shirts will be provided. For health and safety reasons please wear long pants and comfortable, non-slippery, closed-toed shoes. If you have long hair please put it back. Wear a baseball cap or a hair net will be provided for you. Please make sure your attire is workplace appropriate -- FareStart is a clean and sober community so it’s probably best to leave your Budweiser hat at home.
What you will be doing: FareStart is a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals. We will be preparing food alongside FareStart’s chefs and students. This means you’ll be washing, peeling, slicing, dicing, preparing and cooking lots of delicious food so please be ready to utilize your handy (and safe!) knife skills. This opportunity involves preparing food for shelters so it is important that volunteers be comfortable or open to using kitchen knives. If you have any concerns about this, please reach out to us immediately as this may not be the best volunteer opportunity for you at this time.

Can I bring a friend? This event often has a waiting list. Feel free to tell your friends and co-workers - just make sure they register for a shift here. We cannot acommodate unregistered volunteers.

Since 1992, FareStart has provided opportunities for nearly 7,000 people to transform their lives, while also serving over 6 million meals to disadvantaged men, women, and children.
