If you live in Seattle and have never been to Uwajimaya, but love Asian food, then you need to stop what you’re doing and head over to their International District location on 600 5th Avenue South immediately. There you can experience the food court and grocery store that has captivated the city for many years.
1. It’s family owned. It started in 1928 when Fujimatsu Moriguchi, a native of Japan, started selling fishcakes and other food items outside of his truck to Japanese loggers and fishermen in Tacoma. After being in the Japanese-internment camps during World War II, Moriguchi setup its original location at 422 South Main Street in the International District. When he passed away, the business was handed down to his 4 sons.
2. Ground meat art! Their ground meat is somewhat of a spectacle. There’s even a Tumblr for them.
3. Special nights. Every Tuesday from 8am-11am, Seniors get 10% off. On Wednesdays from 6pm-8pm, they offer free lessons of the Japanese game of Go. Fridays are College Night with 10% off from 6pm until close. Also, they usually have several special events every month.
4. The AMAZING food court! The Uwajimaya Village Food Court has burgers, crepes, takoyaki, Korean BBQ, and other Asian inspired cuisine.
5. Uwajipedia. Their website has a directory of many of the food items you may not be familiar with.

16. They care. When Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in November 2013, it caused an unscrupulous amount of damage and took the lives of over 6,300 in that country alone. Uwajimaya was able to fundraise over $35,000 for the victims.
